Bringing great ideas to life

Following the demands of global competitiveness, the 7th R&D Framework Programme of the European Union started the implementation of a new Specific Programme „IDEAS”, concentrating on strategic research, driven by excellent individuals.
The present lecture reports on the principles, strategy and the first results of this Programme, including some statistical data on the first round of the Starting Grant and Advanced Grant systems, run by the European Research Council. Conclusions of the past 2 years of this activity and future plans and hopes of ERC are also briefly presented.
